Seems like we can all breathe a sigh of relief – the bacon shortage predicted by a UK industry group probably isn’t going to happen, at least not here in the US. That doesn’t mean prices won’t go up, but it does mean that you’ll still be able to get all the porky goodness you need.
The idea of a shortage was first raised by Britain’s National Pig Association, citing a decline in that country’s pig population and higher feed prices due to drought. And being the bacon-loving nation that we are, panic soon spread across the Internet.
Fears of a bacon-less existence were put to rest by the American Farm Bureau Federation, who called into question the idea of a bacon shortage:
“Pork supplies will decrease slightly as we go into 2013,” Farm Bureau economist John Anderson said. “But the idea that there’ll be widespread shortages, that we’ll run out of pork, that’s really overblown.”
And to celebrate the lack of a lack of bacon, here’s a recipe for a bacon weave that includes soaking the bacon in whiskey: Bacon Weave Recipe [courtesy of Savory Notes]
